All licence applications for petroleum prospecting and development are facilitated by the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification’s (MMERE) Petroleum Division on behalf of the Director of the Division. These applications are then evaluated by the Petroleum Advisory Board before recommendations are made to the Minister for approval (or rejection).

Licenses for the transportation and storage of petroleum are facilitated and granted by the Ministry for Infrastructure Development (MID) and responsible provincial governments or the Honiara City Council (HCC).
