The management of natural surface and ground water sources to ensure availability of water for supply to urban and rural communities in the Solomon Islands is the mandate and responsibility of the Water Resources Management Division. This mandate includes the routine assessment of water catchment areas and the monitoring of surface and groundwater water levels as well as the monitoring of rainfall levels.

The supply of water to urban areas however, is the responsibility of the Solomon Islands Water Authority (SIWA) which is a Statutory Authority that operates under its own Act.

However, the newly-established Drilling Section of the Water Resources Management Division (WRD) is the lead Government Section responsible for promoting the implementation of community water supply developments in the Solomon Islands. As such, the Section compliments this function with drilling services, aimed at improving the livelihoods of rural and urban communities by giving them access to sustainable groundwater supply options.
